CurieuzeNeuzen Vlaanderen

Objective

Curieuzeneuzen Vlaanderen is a citizen science project in which the entire Flemish population is actively involved in scientific research. The project has 20,000 measuring kits at its disposal. These are window signs with two tubes on the inside that families, companies, schools and organisations hang on a window. After a month, they are handed in and scientists analyse the data coming from the samples. The results will be announced in September 2018. The aim is to involve as many Flemings as possible in the research in order to map air quality in detail across Flanders, both in the city and in the countryside.

Curieuzeneuzen Vlaanderen is scientifically coordinated by Prof. Dr. Ir. Filip Meysman, associated with the Department of Biology and the Institute for Sustainable Development (IMDO) of the University of Antwerp. Several researchers from the Flemish Environment Agency (VMM) and the Flemish Institute for Technological Research (VITO) provide expertise on air quality measurement and modelling. The Research Institute for Work and Society (HIVA- KU Leuven) is investigating the sensitisation and social context. The newspaper De Standaard is co-organising the distribution of the measurement packages, and is providing promotional communication to the general public.
