Impact of air quality on health in Belgium (2023)

There are different ways of representing the health impact of air pollution. In this report, we consider premature deaths (death of a person at an age below life expectancy).

The total number of premature deaths in 2023 in Belgium due to PM2.5 is estimated at about 5,000 and those for ozone at 2,600. The number of premature deaths due to NO₂ in 2023 in Belgium is 1300. When interpreting these figures, the uncertainties associated with these calculations and the fact that premature deaths due to NO2 and particulate matter cannot simply be added up must be taken into consideration.
